Mathilde S., Mathilde J. and Vanessa, three Strasbourg natives who love to eat and share their culinary experiences will guide you through their city on a journey of discovery of the most typical Alsatian establishments. Strasbourg, not just the capital of sauerkraut...

Morning

Not far from the tramstop République, the Michel Snack bar is the perfect spot to start the day. Forget its name: this Strasbourg institution is a pleasant brasserie, popular among local residents. In the morning, you'll hardly be able to choose between the delicious rolls, croissants and croix cannelle (cinnamon hot cross buns - Alsatian pastries) to accompany your coffee. A little later, the brasserie starts running at full throttle and offers traditional dishes at reasonable prices (pepper steak, blanquette de veau, etc.). Also a fine place for lunch!

A fine spot for a weekend brunch. The Sha'com, a bar/restaurant, opened recently on the Malraux presque-isle , an old armaments site beside the water which has become the new city centre of Strasbourg. It offers an all-you-can-eat buffet brunch on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For €18.50, you can enjoy everything: salads, charcuterie, cheeses, soups, eggs, purées, pastries, fruits, cereals...all home made! In good weather, a large terrace welcomes you. As the Sha'com is located at the heart of the Shadok, an exhibition area showcasing digital technology, you can visit the latest exhibition afterwards and tour the FabLab !

If you happen to be in Strasbourg on a Tuesday or Saturday morning, it's well worth taking a tour of the huge Marne Market.  In this traditional market, the stalls of fruit and vegetable merchants, butchers and dairy product sellers are mingled with clothes and shoes stands. It's the ideal spot to discover local produce.  Make sure that you avoid resellers - don't hesitate to ask the traders if they are selling their own produce, and look at the origin of the products.  If the names sound Alsatian, you're on to a winner! For the carnivores among you, there is an excellent trader who sells not only traditional chicken but also many varied grilled meats, such as whole rabbit cooked in its own fat or roasted duck. Everything is available at affordable prices (small chicken €8). Your task is to find it before lunch! And if you enjoy farmer's and artisan cheese, make straight for the yellow truck of the Adam dairy!

Midday

By noon, your stomach will be rumbling from all the walking. Now's the time to drop over to the Épicerie (the Grocer's) for a quick and simple lunch based on open sandwiches. The décor is attractive and the sandwiches are delicious, but due to its small size and great success, this place is always packed to the rafters! Come at exactly noon during the week, and if you're confused by all the choice, we warmly recommend the camembert, honey and almond sandwich.

Just arrived and immediately a favourite! Opened in March 2015, the Troquet (bar) des Kneckes pays homage to its Alsatian roots with local proverbs on the walls and ceiling (ideal for learning a few words of Alsatian). This hip brasserie offeres typical dishes at reasonable prices, or dishes from other regions with regional produce (Fish and kneckes, scones with Munster cheese, etc.). Even the coke is Alsatian! (Elsass cola). A tip: stop by for a tarte flambée and return later to try a local beer. Free arcade games and table football add to the fun.

Le boeuf bourguignon de La Hache (©La Hache/Facebook)

La Hache (the Axe), a gastronomic bistrot located behind the old Customs House in the city centre, has a varied menu of high-quality produce. The duck dishes and the beef bourguignon deserve a special mention! With a peaceful, calming atmosphere, this is the ideal spot for a long pause on a chilly day.

To drink great wine, you sometimes need to go to...the hospital. Founded in 1395, the Cave historique des Hospices de Strasbourg (Historical Hospital Cellar) allowed the storage of wine and also other alimentary staples. Patients paid for their hospital care with a plot of vines or a piece of land, or even bequeathed their worldly goods to the hospital for the good of their soul. Over six centuries, the wine from grapes grown on the Hospital's lands was produced in this cellar. One of these huge wooden edifices is engraved with the legendary date of 1472. The interior contains the oldest barrel-stored wine in the world, 450 litres of a legendary vintage.

Today, the Cellar continues to play an important role in regional winemaking history. Since 1996, 25 vineyards distributed from the north to the south of the Alsatian winegrowing area have come to improve their wines there under the supervision of an oenologist. You can buy them at the Cave historique shop, where you are sure to find the latest vintages.

In autumn 2014, a new unmissable establishment opened to showcase Alsatian produce: la Nouvelle Douane (the New Customs House). Some twenty local producers with various specialties, using organic cultivation methods or with superoir quality produce, were selected by the Town Hall of  Strasbourg to launch this market of regional produce. Result: top quality produce, sold at the same price as in large supermarkets, thanks to the cutting out of middlemen.  Here you'll find seasonal fruits but also preserved produce, which is handy if you're seized with a mania for asparagus in August! Whether you're searching for a nice Cremant for your apéritif, foie gras, some tasty meat or honey, this is the one-stop shop...all while supporting local agriculture!

Sometimes old pots are used to make the best sauerkraut. And over the years, le Clou restaurant has remained true to its reputation. It's the perfect spot for typical Alsatian cuisine. The sauerkraut is delicious and well garnished, the seasonal black pudding is top class, as is the waddle (jambonneau) braised in pinot noir...maybe skip dessert though, it is not at the same level as the dishes.

The coin des Pucelles has only about twenty tables available, so you'll need to either reserve well in advance or else get lucky! This restaurant brings you back childhood, into the home of an Alsatian grandmother who cooks up delicious traditional recipes in large homely pots. An authentic and delicious Winstub (a typical Alsatian restaurant, with a hospitable atmosphere and an intimate setting)!
